Although he was a scholarly ornithologist, every page of this book reveals a rapturous delight in the wildlife of the pampas, animal or human. He mixed with cutthroat gauchos, pursued ostriches, explored lagoons, and allowed burrowing armadillos to drag him elbow-deep into the earth. A wonderful read.
